Replacing water pump on a 95 Johnson 50 hp outboard and can't seem to find info on where shift rod is located on this motor. Manual isn't very clear on where to disconnect it. Any help would be appreciated.

The shift rod is located vertically in the forward portion of the lower unit. As such, it would travel upwards to be found forward of the swivel steering tube that encloses the driveshaft. Have someone wiggle the shift lever back and forth while you observe the shift linkages from the shift cable at the engine inwards.
No, I'm unaware of the connect/disconnect procedure of the shift rod as I retired in 1991 and do not have the 1995 manual.
