  • Johnson 48HP SPL issue

Johnson 48HP SPL outboard seems to be skipping or something. also it is very stiff to accelerate after 3/4 of the way forward theres a delay with the acceleration also . Just bought this 87 boat starts great and runs but something seemed off today.
Seems to be skipping at the end. Would like some advice

That sounded like the propeller suddenly sucked in some air... raced away in rpms a bit momentarily.

The cavitation plate just above the propeller should be approximately 3/4 below the keel (bottom of the boat) at the transom.

The angle of attack of the engine, looking at the rig from the side sitting on a trailer, should be that the cavitation plate should be a close as possible to be parallel with the bottom of the boat. You do not want that cavitation plate to be on a angle (raise or lower the craft while underway).

If the above is as it should be... it's possible the propeller is starting to fail (slipped hub) or a transducer or something in attached to the hull in such a position to throw a air pocket into the propeller area.

Joe Thank you very much for your input. anything helps. I realized the brackets that the motor locks into were so rusted it wasn't setting in and clipping so it was riding a little higher than. it should .Sprayed some wd40 on the brackets and it went right down and locked in and is riding in the position you're explaining now!
