Help with my tachometer problem

My tachometer reads 1400 RPM even at idle, and will not read higher until my revs are around 4200.

Someone on another forum has opined that the tach is connected to, and therefore affected by, a possibly bad rectifier diode.

Any thoughts or other assistance would be welcomed.
