Default 1999 v6 Johnson drive shaft removal

I have a 1999 v6 Johnson outboard. I am in the process of replacing the lower unit and the new one i purchased has a 25 inch drive shaft and my engine requires a 20 inch. I have been trying to remove the 20 inch from the old lower unit for some time now and have not had any luck. I do not want to have the entire gear case taken apart to do it because I know it can be done with a puller. I just do not have one nor do I know anyone who does locally. I have tried using a pair of vise grips and a hammer to hit the drive shaft up and out and it has not worked. If anyone has any advice for me I would be much obliged.
