Default Carb Setting

I own a 115 hp 2002 Johnson Outboard, my manual indicates the low speed setting to be 5-3/4 turns out -it seems too rich. When adjusted to 4-1/2 turns out it seems to run much better. My question will the leaner setting than manual indicates cause any problems? I don't want to break something at the leaner setting than specified in manual. I am wondering also if the low speed setting contribute to the high speed performance?

All input is appreciated!
