1988 60 hp vro idling problem

have problem with my engine in that it cuts out when i try put it in gear from nuetral position any ideas what is causing this maybe a coil????? how can i check if a coil is working or not

Couple things: Idle in nutral should be around 900 rpm, in gear should be around 6-700 rmp. If not you should bump up the rpm idle adjustment: might drain the fuel bowls and check for trash. If trash comes out of the bowls you may need to slap a rebuild kit in the carbs. If the VRO is not working there wil be a few indications. Check your owners manual: Horn, No Oil Light, have to squezze the bulb to keeep the engine running, etc.

i have my vro unit disconnected but i feel its summit small do you know how to check the coils if they are good are not
