Johnson 6 horse

I Recently acquirred a 1994 johnson 6 horse motor. i would like to start it but i am not near a lake. muffs will not work on this motor, and i was told there is no other fitting to fit over the water intake. i was also told not to start it in a barrel or garbage can. the reason was there would not be enough water. anybody have any experience with this type of situation? i would like to know it runs ok before i drag it to the lake. thanks in advance. this i was told by a johnson repair facility..

i dont understand why you cant start it in a test tank / barrel as long as the water is 3inches higher than the bottem fin it should work and pump water fine if you bought it from the shop you say said you cant try it this way it sounds iffy i have one and this is how i flush it out every time and it still pumps plenty of water fine as long as it pumps water it would be ok to run in a tank upto you but
