Johnson 225 (1990 - 25") exhaust ports

I have a question regarding the two small exhaust ports at the rear of the motor. A marine repair shop welded them closed and said it was not a problem. I think it may be an issue. Motor runs well, but kind of loud. So........how can I repair it? Are the ports in the midsection or the adaptor plate? All help appreciated! Tried to add a picture but don't see where or how?

hi m8 the holes are like a baffle for your exhaust some also spray some water from them holes a muffler to make it quieter so dont see why they where closed off and think your right

Does anyone happen to know where the holes are (midsection or exhaust adaptor plate) before I go looking for parts. Hard to tell with the lower cowling attached.
