How to adjust shift linkage on 2002 25 hp tiller

I recently put a new water pump on my 2002 25 hp johnson. I have to admit I am new to this so please be gentle. After reinstalling the lower unit, I am having a hard time adjusting the shift linkage. I know I probably should have marked where the correct adjustment was on the nut but I did not. Now I can't seem to get it adjusted to where I have forward, neutral, and reverse. Anyone have suggestions?

Also, now the motor will start in gear. I see there was a recall on this year and model because of this and there is a step by step guide for adjusting the neutral shift lockout lever and shift actuator cam. Anyone ever done this before?
