Default timing linkage inquirys

Hello everyone. My question today is focused on the timing arm and related plastic components on a 1985 140 hp. I do not have another motor to compare to. My linkage from the throttle up to the fine adjustment tube in my opinion feels loose and sloppy. It moves fine throughout rpm range but I feel that due to it's simple complexity, it should move back and forth with the some rigidity, like an arm in a swisse watch. Is this sloppyness in the linkage something to worry about, or should I look to replace the 26 year old plastic linkage with new? I'm afraid that the timing linkage I have now, is causing stalling problems when idle in the water. I do not have this problem in the tank. Thanks in advance. Stephan
