JOHNSON Parts HJ70TXEDA 1996 starter problems

My motor started last week --- I charged the battery and now the started spins but the gear will not deploy to engaged the engine. Suggestions? Someone suggested lubricating the shaft that the gear rides on. Has the solenoid gone up?
