Default 2001 johnson/bombardier 150 lower unit
I am trying to remove the lower unit,I have located all the bolts but need some help w/shift rod.can anyone tell me the steps to release the rod from linkage? pics would be very helpful also thanks

Unfortunately there are no sufficient pictures to assist you. It is difficult to remove the shift shaft retainer. I recommend purchasing a service manual. The following link should assist you.
