Default 1979 gearcase removal

we had trouble removing the 5/8 bolt in the gearcase for a couple of days untill we finally put some heat to it. we were so focus on this bolt due to fearing breaking it we forgot to put the shift in reverse.now that we have removed the bolt and the gearcase dropped we put it in reverse and the gearcase wont come off. we removed six bolts total is there another item we have to remove someone mentioned a gearcase shifter or something in the lower case....yes this is my first time doing this. can someone help me and tell me if we forgot something or something else has to come off.

What horsepower is it?
If its anything like my 1976 70hp johnson, there is a shifter linkage under/behind the bottom carb. that has to be disconnected, you can access it from port side. After that is disconnected you may have to use wood wedges on both sides of the gearcase (where it started to come apart) to get it to separate.
