Okay to turn outboard upside-down?

I've got a 1984 8hp Johnson OB with a stuck drive shaft (the lower unit is off, the drive shaft stayed with the engine). I've read advice on inverting the motor and treating the connection with ATF and acetone 50/50. My questions are; is it safe to turn the motor upside down? and would it be better to use kerosene in place of acetone (less caustic)? Thanks!
