Default 92' 70hp johnson water pump

Trying to change the water pump. I know I need to somehow disconnect the shifting rod, and i see where it connects. Question is, do I have to take off the carburators to be able to disconnect it? I don't see any way to get it apart. Seems like there should be a simpler way, that I'm not seeing. I had some one tell me there is a set screw close to where the rod makes a couple 45 degree bends, but I dont see one, and even if I did, I dont see how you would get to it.

There is no simple way to remove/install the shift rod retainer. The retainer can be removed/installed with the carburetors still on the engine, however it does make it easier if they are removed.
