Default 1997 90 HP wont crank

Hello all just joined, looking for some help. I have a 1997 90HP Johnson that was my dads. I just mounted it on an old boat I bought. The motor hadn't been started for years but after using starting fluid it fired and ran great. I don't have the gas tank installed on this boat yet and was using a portable 3gallon tank. I ran through 6 gallons of gas and everything was great. I brought my wife down to give her a ride and the motor will now not start. The power tilt/trim works and I think I'm hearing the choke kick in (years of riding motorcycles don't hear so good) but it will not turn over. I have power to the stater and by jumping to the top terminal (yellow wire) on the solenoid and the starter it will engage the starter. I'm thinking my problem is in the wiring harness or starter switch. There doesn't seem to be a lanyard safety switch on the control box, but on the side is an illustration on and off. Really confused here because nothing was changed and it was only a matter of 10 minutes from running great to nothing. I will get a manual but I'm sitting here at work now and any help would be appreciated. Thanks

if you manually jump the starter over with the key on, does it start?
