1994 Johnson 120HP lower unit issue

Engine has 241 hrs total. Just changed lower unit gear oil as I always have since new except 1 issue, the bearing set screw besides the screen intakes was loose. So as I was draining oil I took loose, inspecting gasket/washer and replaced.

Re-filled gear case, slowly from the bottom until fluid came out top fill hole. Replaced plugs.

Took boat out today, ran great for a few minutes then started knocking very bad from lower unit. Only knocks in forward gear,not reverse. I limped back to dock, loaded trailer.end of day.

Question, what should i do now? I have read some on the bearing set screws and everything says not to loosen but, this one was already loose. Anyone think I'll need a complete rebuild or can I salvage this unit? Boat is mint and only has 241 hrs of easy run time. Gear oil been changed twice a year since new. No water or other issues other than knock that just so happened to appear after set screw came loose. (Just to be sure it's the long screw that's halfway between the drain/fill plugs besides the intake screens.

Your best option is to bring it into an authorized Johnson dealer and have them diagnose problem. Could be an easy cheap fix.

Thanks for the input, I found a local OMC mechanic I will take boat to next week. From the prices I'm seeing on lower units, I hope fix is relatively inexpensive.

let me know my 1995 115 burnt #4piston up and i just picked up a used motor to put on motor is complete going to sell whole or part out

OK, thanks. I wil not be able to get motor looked at till this weekend. I take it your model lower unit will bolt right up?

Approx how many hours are on your unit and how much do you want for it?
