Johnson starter rewind spring

I have a Johnson 15R77M and the starter spring broke. According to your online parts the replacement number is 0318944. Upon receipt of the new spring it is in appearance to overly large to fit in the cup & guide assy. Being very familiar with small engine I just don't see how this new spring is going to fit in the cup even if I put more tension on the spring. Is there another spring that is not listed for this model that will work? Hope you have some insight on a possible fix.
