lower unit interchange

my johnson 60hp will not engage reverse-clacking noise- and when i unhook linkage it will go INTO reverse but will not hold in gearwhile running and in water. i have a johnson 60hp(j60tlecm) and a johnson 50hp(j50tlccs) and was wondering if the lower units would interchange. thanx drydock

Unfortunately the 50hp is too old and will not interchange with the 60hp. The Gear housing itself should interchange, however there is an unknown difference in the internal components, would suspect the driveshaft.

thank you. we are taking the 60hp lower unit apart to see what the reverse problem is. i have an ex-marine shop owner (wayne johnson) looking at it. we may have to rob parts from another 60hp or buy parts. damn. thanks, again.
