Default 2000 Johnson 70 HP J70PLSSD

I am having trouble shifting into reverse. No problems shifting into forward. I checked the linkage and cable. Nothing is loose. After the motors runs for a while, it will sometimes shift. Any suggestions?

If the shift cable is adjusted correctly, could be the clutch dog.

Is this very hard to change out? I looked at the schematic and it seems easy enough. Would I have to drop the lower unit to change out the clutch dog?

I am uncertain on this particular model. I do believe that the shift shaft must be removed from the lower unit, requiring the lower unit to be lowered.
