J3RETB, Gear housing

Hi Folks, I appreciate any information that will result form this post. I have a 1993 J3RETB, with water pump issues. I have loosened up the gear box boot, but it will not slide down and off. (Two bolts that fasten to the cavatation plate on mid section) It will move back and forth but will not slide off. Any ideas on missing steps? I do not want to force it down and break something? Will need to disconnect shift rod from shift linkage at engine before gearcase will come off.
