  • 1979 Johnson Seahorse 25hp Outboard Pull cord replacement

Ok I am new with boat motors, But I have been working on my 1979 Johnson seahorse outboard. Finally got it running then went to crank it back up and pull string broke. I have taken the recoil assembly apart. attached a new rope and put it all back together and pulled it and the rope wouldnt retract back in. Now I know I did something backwards so I took it back apart and tried redoing it, but then broke the recoil spring but have new one on the way. Can someone please give me a detailed description on how to do this correctly. Or just post a link on how to do it. Could not find one.

    Thanks, Brendon

Once get new spring in only put a couple wraps on rope, just enough to retract rope too many wraps will cause spring to break.

Remove the starter assembly. Remove the old starter spring (becareful as there may be tension that will spring at you). Install the new starter spring (if spring is prewound the try not to unwind when installing). Run starter rope, turn starter pulley 2-3 turns to apply retracting resistance. Run rope through rope stopper and pilot. Install handle. Reinstall starter assembly.
