  • 175Hp Fast Strike new purchase help

    Afternoon all,

Writing from the shores of Lake hickory in North Carolina. I just purchased a 1993 19 ft Seaswirl with a 175hp Fast Strike last night. After looking the boat over inside and out and taking it for a ride on the lake AND checking compression in all 6 cylinders I bought it. My question is based on after pulling all 6 plugs and noticing everyone of them was on the dark side and a little wet with oil. All cylinders had at least 120 to 125 psi for compression. The motor at startup coughed a little and stalled twice but after warm-up it ran great and idled just as good. But I thought, and owning several different 2-stroke motors in my life but never a 2 stroke boat motor only jet skis, that this Johnson probably needs a tune-up. The owner I bought it from said the boat hadn't been run in a few months and been to the lake in a longer amount of time. The engine is oil injected from a remote tank not pre-mix. The plugs looked to me like it was running rich or the oil injection system might need to be adjusted. I definitely know I need to get a owners manual for the motor AND a service manual. I only know the boat is a 1993 and I do not think this is the stock motor that came with the boat. How do I know what model and year the engine is to be able to get the right manuals and where would I get them also? I want to be able to tune it up myself and also check lower unit oils or anything else that needs proper attention. The motor like I said, ran very well, it was just the plugs were not the optimum color and a tad wet. I never did pull the plugs after we got back from the ride. mayeb they were a different color then.

Anyway, model number and year, how or where can I find that on the engine and where is the best source for factory manuals?

    Thanks

    Sid

The model number and serial number should be on the metal which is next to the motor. It is a small plate stamped with the information. You can purchase engine manuals specifically to your motor at DIY manuals or maybe its DYI. they run about $145 but they are worth it. Hope this helps
