1974 40hp restoration

I bought a model 40EL74 from a fella as my winter project to get running. It turns over nicely by hand. Bought a new battery and connected it to the starter solenoid. Nothing happened. Connected it directly to the starter. It turned over 2 times and stopped. Now nothing. Any idea what happened?

If starter wont turn over with battery connected direct to it then have a bad starter.
