  • Johnson 120 hp -1985 dropping revs

    hello!

my dad bought a "new" boat with a johnson 120hp the other day but it has an issue with it sometimes momentarily dropping revs at high revs, first we thought we were low on fuel, but that wasn't the case.

the previous owner had the same problem so he had the carbs and fuelpump rebuilt but apparently it didn't fix the problem. the previous owner also said that this only happens sometimes, like one trip in 20.

what could be the problem? clogged fuel lines from the tank, ignition?

    thanks for any replies

    BR

Try pumping primer bulb or bumping choke when it drops rpm's to see if helps. Check each plug wire with timing light when it drops to see if all cylinders are firing.

hello, thank you for the fast answer!

the drop in RPM is so short (maybe half a second to a second) that there is no time for that. maybe it's the ignition cutting out?

That is probably an ignition problem, check wires to coils for corrosion or poor contact, check grounds.

I have the same issue with my 140. What did you find to be the problem. Thanks in advance
