  • Starter kicks out

    Hey Guys,
new here and looking for some help with a 1998 Oceanrunner 115, Only has about 90 or so hours on it. When trying to start this outboard, the starter kicks out before the engine starts. I can't keep the starter engaged long enough to get the motor started. It'll take several tries before it will engage long enough to start the motor. Any ideas? Need more info to help diagnose? I have removed the starter and it doesn't spin smoothly by hand, it almost feels as though it clicks when you spin the gear at the top. I can stick my fingers in the housing of the motor and can spin the gears moving freely, so I'm kinda confused....This has been doing it for a long time, I'm just annoyed now and want to see if I can get it straightened out. Any help/advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thx

May have a bad bendix gear on starter.
Starter wont spin freely by hand, magnets inside it will prevent it from moving freely.

Thank you, I did stop in a local dealer/marine place today and the starter he had did the exact same thing so leading me to believe (as he advised also) that the bendix gear is sticking due to lack of lubrication. (don't know if youre aware but it uses a gear reduction bendix setup, odd to say the least but...) But will def try to get a better look at it but in order to fully access it, I have to remove a crap load of stuff off the top of the motor....huge pain in the ......Anyway, thank you again for the reply and I will post updates in case anyone else has had or has issues like mine.
