  • 1992 Johnson 50 runs bad after 20 minutes

I have a 1992 Johnson 50 hp than runs great for about 15-20 minutes. The motor will then not go above fast idle and when you try and misfires terribly. Changed the coil (no change) and next will be powerpack. Am I on the right track?
    Thanks

I had the same problem with my 1990 175. My problem was overheating. When the engine overheats your powerpack goes into safety mode and limits you to 2500rpm's. I bought a IR thermometer and checked the head temps while running. your temps should be around 150. When you turn the key off it resets the power pack so you can run again until engine temp comes up. Not sure if this is your problem but I fought with mine for weeks until I found the problem.

It has a new impeller , but needless to say it could still overheat. Pumps geat water and will run again and check temp. Does not give any overheat alarm. Will post what I find. Where did you get the IR thermometer?
        Thanks

I bought mine at Lowes for $29.00. I had just made all those changes but still overheated. I just pulled my heads and found clogged water jackets and a lot of salt deposits. Im sure that was causing my problem.

            New Power pack

A new OMC powerpack fixed my issue!
