  • Johnson 9.9 - concsistent stalling problems, Help !

    Hi All

I have just joined the forum and am looking for some good advice on my Johnson 9.9 which ive decided is unusable due to the issues ive been having with it.

the motor was bought new in ~'94 then was stored in a shed for about 15 years unused.
When i dug it out last year we had the carb cleaned, water pump impellor changed last year, but on testing it kept stalling. I got it looked at again this year, resulting in another carb clean and a replaced carb gasket.

I went back to the repair shop three times, with always the same problem - the motor would appear to run OK for ~1 hour, then it would fail to idle and just die at low revs. Each time the slow running settings were adjusted and the carb mix, resulting in seemingly good running, but then the same problem would arise.
It was used on local river so ~5 knots, but i took it on the sea last week and really opened it up - the problem was even worse ! Its REALLY wanted to stall at anything below about 1/3 of full throttle, and at tickover stalled immediately.

My thinking is that by now, the carb must be ok. But i also think that it looks like a fuel supply problem. There is a small fuel leak around the fuel connector (on outboard motor side - where the rubber hose from fuel filter meets the connector) but people reckon this is not the issue. I also note that the fuel line (ie with bulb) is the orginial, and i know these can go inside - although the fuel appears primed whilst its running.

I was thinking of changing the following:

    New fuel line + bulb
    New fuel pump (??)

I would really appreciate any help/ advice

    Cheers
    Chris
