  • Trying to figure out what happened to my stern brakets and TT unit.

I have a problem, one that I think has to do with electrolysis. My boat stays in the water and is bottom painted along with the stern brackets/ TT unit, just the lower sections are painted.

Well, the other day I noticed that both bottom lobs that hold the pin to the TT unit broke on the stern brackets. Yanked the boat out of water and noticed the whole bottom section of the TT unit is rotted all the to the pin. All the parts that got corroded are under the water when the boat is moored. The corrosion areas have a slimy white junk on it that when dried out turned into a hardened jelly consistency. I had a brand new zinc pad on the lower bracket and was not even year old, needless to say its gone and I have no clue for how long it was gone for. If I take a flat headed screw driver to the corroded sections, it flakes off pretty easy till I get to the non corroded sections. Again, all that is corroded is the parts that stay under water, trim tabs are fine, just seemed to attack the aluminum.

Now, I have a dual bank charger that I always plug into when I am mooring at home, it stays plugged in all the time unless I am on the boat which is every weekend. I also keep the battery switch on because the bilge pump someone wired incorrectly and when you shut switch off the pump will not automatically turn on. I am going to switch that so I can shut batteries off now when I'm moored at home.

What should I look for? I have 0 wires in conduit or anything like that where I live that's in the water I.E. fishing lights, lift etc. My neighbor on the other hand does have a lift that's about 20-30' away from the stern of my boat. I have to buy a new TT unit and stern brackets but do NOT want this happening again, and I need to know what the heck caused this to stop future damage.

Thanks so much for any and all help!
