I think I need to replace the wiring harness on my 1999 Johnson 50 HP ....from the key switch to the motor ... where do I acquire one? I have changed everything on the motor its self...power pack, stator..everything that has to do with the electric circuit...it still starts sometimes and runs great...then will not start at all....I have replaced the key switch....we live on Anna Maria Island Florida with high humidity...the only left is the wiring harness....or buy a Yamaha .....

At your nearest Evinrude dealer - or you can search online for businesses that sell Johnson/Evinrude parts online at a discount. boats.net and marineengines.com are two.

To take this a step further, let's talk "Southern" definitions:

Won't start = won't spin over by the starter.

      Won't start-up = won't start running.

Which is your problem in context with the above definitions?

Actually, down South we more often use the term "crank" in lieu of the term "start". Still...... you catch my drift, I'm sure.

        Ok..I got it…it cranks… at proper RPM's… getting fuel….no spark….will not start up…..
Once it is running it will start again and again…..if it sets for a couple of days it will crank but not start….
Where is down south for you…I am on Anna Maria Island FL…by Sarasota..

          Mick:

I am in North Alabama, but was born and raised in Central Florida. My grandparents moved there from Georgia and South Carolina in 1941. Went to Anna Maria many times as a child and youth in a 1936 Chevy Coupe. Also Long Boat Key, Sanibel/Captiva, Marco, etc. We used to ride the ferry boat to Sanibel - there was no bridge then - and we used to tent camp right on the beach at Marco Island. The bridge to Marco was wood plank. Only a very few shacks on Marco back then.....

I am guessing your problem is not going to be your wiring harness from control box back to engine. I think the problem is going to be either the charge coil or the power pack. (The charge coil makes the volts needed for the power pack to do its job.) Either the charge coil is not sending juice to the power pack or the power pack is not making voltage to charge the cylinder coils.

The third possibility is, the key switch (or engine harness) is shorting out the power pack. Usually that turns out to be the key switch - keeping the kill circuit engaged. That would be a yellow wire with a red tracer. If you have the proper OMC tools you can disconnect that wire from the plug and see if it will crank-up then. Of course, if it does crank-up, you won't be able to shut it off with the key switch since you will have disconnected the kill switch circuit. You will need to yank the plub wires to kill it. In that situation, plastic sparkplug wire pliers work better than 20,000 volts going through your body to the puddle you are standing in.
