  • Long or short shaft?

I have a 1976 johnson 35 motor Model 35E76S. I need to know if it is a long or short shaft motor since I will replace it with a different motor. Thanks.

You can do this two ways:

Remove your motor from your boat and measure your boat transom height right in the middle of your boat. Measure straight down - not against the transom. It should be about 16" for a standard (short) length motor. Or, 20"-21" for a long shaft.

With your old motor still on your boat, measure from the top of the transom down to the anti-cavitation plate on your gearcase. Between 16" and 17" is a standard (short) motor, while 21" to 22" is a long shaft motor.
