Overheating 4 HP

Does anyone know if a 4HP johnson 1971 has a thermostat ?

No thermostat.

First, check waterpump. Next, if the motor has been in saltwater much of its life, clean out the water passages in the cylinder head with vinegar. If still running hot, pull the power head and check the water tube grommet at the top of the water tube. They swell up over long periods of time and clog the water tube. You can ream them out with your pocket knife and clear the water passage.
