Johnson 9.9 cooling system

I have a 1985 Johnson 9.9, I replaced the water pump (complete kit) the old pump was completely gone. It does pump water now and it returns back out the match stick size hole like it suppose to. But it also comes out a 1/4 inch hole in the mid section about 2 inches from the top. Is this normal? I have never noticed this before.Did I do something wrong?
