  • Need help....82' Johnson 70hp

I've had some problems that were intermittent all last summer. I'd go to fire up the motor and no "fire" at all. I'd make sure there was a good charge on battery, no water in fuel, lanyard OK, all to no avail. A day later, it would start but it never seemed to have the normal power.
This went on all summer, while I would try to rule things out while this went on.

I replaced the start switch, the kill switch, while the local mechanic thought the powerpack, so that was changed as well.

The other thing I noticed was when it did run, I couldn't get full power and at the end of the summer I was worried that I couldn't get enough power to keep it running long enough to get to the boat landing.

    So, I need suggestions..

I've pulled the flywheel and noticed a small bit of "goo" under the stator while it also has a small split in it.
The timer wiring ohms out at 18 ohms between the white wire and the others which I think is wrong also.

I'm thinking about just giving the whole electrical system an overhaul and replace the stator, timer and ignition coils.

    Any thoughts out there?
    Thanks in advance

First off, you need to get a good service manual for your motor, if you haven't got one. Then you can start testing those items by the book. The ”goo” may be important? Is it a grease, or something that has melted?

Good luck, post back when able if you find anything.

It's definitely not grease. Sure that it's some electrolytic type material, just not a lot of it.
You're right, I should grab a manual, but just figured that if I'm considering an electrical overhaul, then I might as well change out most of the main components, since many of them tend to wear down the others when they fail.

Just wondering if anyone else out there has ran into this type of problem I have, and what the outcome was.

      Thanks
