  • water pump question

    Hello All,
Changed out the water pump on a 1989 Johnson 48 spl. The pump I removed was marked "70 Hp" on the flat plate and the impeller had five or six blades.
The impeller I installed had three blades. The engine now overheats and does not have a pee stream. Pee hose is not plugged. The impeller I installed supposedly was for this engine. Any thoughts? Can anyone give me a part number for a impeller with more than three blades that will fit?
    Thanks

I think if I removed an impeller, and bought a replacement, then if not identical when I went to install, I would have contacted the supplier right then to get it straightened out? Why even attempt putting something different back in?

I'd take the old impeller, and new to a dealer/ supplier and buy the correct one. A Johnson or evinrude dealer can get you the proper part numbers you need (might need a pic of serial number tag with you- can't hurt).

    Good luck.

The pump I removed was marked "70 HP", so it obviously was not the correct impeller. Looking online at OEM parts I see an impeller with three blades, the same as the sierra part I installed. You do not use a 70Hp pump in a 48 Hp motor. Just because a part in aftermarket and not OEM does not mean it is no good. My opinion.

That's why I suggested taking old and new to a dealer parts store. Both evinrude & Johnson sell those parts, they may be best at answering your situation. Also, take pic of serial number tag. They may need that.

Good luck. Let us know what you find out?
