  • Johnson remote disassembly - 1988 V4

    A little help please.

Hi everyone I have an old 1988 Johnson V4 remote and need to replace the tilt/trim switch. I have it apart but can't seem to work out how to get the control lever freed from the front plate. There's still grease down the bottom so I'm not sure what fastener has been used?
I've tried allen keys etc with no luck.
Has anyone done this before, I'm sure its simple?
I don't want to damage it.

    Thanks in advance

Is it possible on the front of lever, the black disc might pop off, revealing a screw?
I hope you've taken pics of how everything came apart?

Good luck. Post back when able, let us know how you're doing.

That's what I thought too! What appears to be a removeable black disc is part of a one piece molded front of the lever. I can see two screws that hold the two piece lever together but to get to them requires the lever to be free of the front panel of the remote.
My gut feel is there is a fastener in the middle of the base connecting the lever, this could possibly be damaged requiring it to be drilled out.
Thought I'd see if any of the wise folk here could help out before I attack it with the cordless drill.

Good luck, this control should be same as yours.
