  • 1958 Johnson 35hp only gets spark to bottom cylinder

Hello all! So heres the deal... i have a 1958 35hp Super Seahorse, model #RDS-20 and when i put it in the water this year it was only running on one cylinder. Naturally the first thing i did was change the plugs.... still no go... so then i checked the points. The points are clean and look brand new still just to be sure i took some sand paper to them to clean them. Still nothing... then i went and changed the condensers... you guessed it didnt work... then i changed the wires and the coil to the top cylinder... i grabbed my timing light from the garage and hooked 'er up to the bottom and it was flashing great then the top and still nothing.... EXCEPT!!!!!..... when it is cranking from the starter. As the starter is turning the flywheel im getting the strobe from the light but as soon as the engine starts running the spark stops. As its running i will pull of the top spark plug wire and no change to the running of the engine.. plug it back in and unplug the bottom and kill the engine. I will admit i am a novice... but i am completely stumped...... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

I might check the wire that goes to that top coil, all the way back to the points. Check for any stiff (interior corroded, insulation may look ok, but wire not) areas, worn insulation (grounding out), pinched wire (weak, or no spark), then check all the stator coils, one may be not good.

Post back if find anything, good luck.
