  • Slow recoil on rope starter

I have an old 4.5 HP Johnson seahorse. It has been rebuilt and runs well, starts easy etc. This season, however the recoil on the rope starter is extremely slow. Wondering if there is something in the way of lubrication or adjustment to get it to work better. Or do I need to replace or repair? I am definitely a novice.

Probably result of grease drying up, if it hasn't been worked on since it last worked well. If your model doesn't have any small holes through the top into the recoil mechanism, near the center, then the recoil assy will probably need to be taken off the motor. Once off, turned upside down, and spray a lithium lubricant on center post, where the bolt holds it together. Hold the assy with one hand, and pull the cord many times. If the lube works in it should loosen up. Do not remove the bolt on center post (also look for any other places that you can spray lube into that might be near center post, it may help), because there is a spring inside that can come loose and cause injury if not familiar with recoil assy's.
When putting back on motor, you may need to pull rope slowly till it fits back down to bolt up. Before tightening bolts pull recoil to make sure it is working good, then tighten bolts well. Put water to water pump, and pull to see if working ok.

If recoil rope is worn and fat, it could be tight going through guide and causing the slow recoil problem. If this is the case, post back. I can tell you how to change rope with recoil in place.

    Good luck.
