I removed the starter , the bottom end cap bushing is gone and hole is oval. Do I need to remove the plastic cover on top of the flywheel to inspect the reduction gear system ? Did top end play from starter gear engagement cause the bottom cap to be worn out ? Please help , thanks West Coast Boater .

Not sure what came first, but basically if you replace the starter, put the whole new assy right back in like you took it out. If still having problems, that's when you go the extra distance, to see if more problems. While starter is out you can see the matching teeth that starter engages, and can move flywheel all the way around slowly to inspect all the teeth.

Good luck, hope this answered your questions?
