  • 1980 7.5 hp water pump install help needed

When I dropped the lower end and unbolted the water pump I looked down and there was a 1/8 dowel pin lying dangerously close to the drive shaft hole. The Dowell pin appears to go into a notch in the impeller. My replacement impeller came with the same dowel pin. The notch in the imrpeller is 1/2 the diameter of the dowel pin. The problem is there isn't a notch on the drive shaft for the other 1/2 of the dowel pin. I can slide the impeller onto the shaft without the Dowell pin but there isn't anyway or anywhere to install the 1/8 Dowel pin. I have pictures if it will help.

If the dowel pin locks the impeller to the drive shaft, then there must be a place for the pin to fit into? Was the previous pin sheared-off (is it same length as the new pin?). If it did shear, then the hole in drive shaft may be camouflaged by the piece still in the hole?
If you find the hole, mark it (so not lost again). Then you'll have to figure a way to get the broken piece out? tap it in lightly (may loosen it?), find center try small drill with oil (may spin?) ?

    Good luck.
