Got a 175 johnson two stroke. The engine is in excellent condition for a motor that age.
Issue: Motor started being fussy to crank and then wouldnt idle properly. Spit and sputter but throttle down and it got up om plane and ran great. Finally stopped dead in its tracks and would only crank with the throttle open in nuetral but would die trying to put it in gear. Mechanic diagnosed the coil not getting fire but here is the weird part. After periods of sitting the motor would try to fire by itsslf.
Long story short. I replased the ignition switch and the motor ran perfect. Like a brand new one but it only lasted about 30 mins. Now we are back to the initial spitting and sputtering. ???? The motor is an 02 model and the switch has 6 post connection points on the back. The boat is a Huricane Fun Deck. Any opinions?

Sounds like an electrical issue, check kill switch, neutral switches, any wiring connectors on motor and gauges & battery. If any appear to be dirty, corroded, or loose, then clean them. I don't believe the switch has gone bad again, but in changing the switch, you may have bumped into a poor connection that made it run well, then went back to a poor connection again? So, your problem might be near the switch wires? Just a thought.

Good luck. Post back of you find anything.

      Thanks

      Thanks Solarman,
That is what I have been thinking. It would almost have to be an issue between the switch to the motor if the new switch fixed it for a short period of time.
