  • J10rel rough idle

I have a 1980 J10REL (remote control) that has run beautifully since I bought it about three years ago. It would start immediately when cranked; it would idle smoothly for hours if I let it.

Then, this summer, I started her up, she ran for about 10 seconds, then died and would not restart. The upshot was I had a lot of water in my 6G tank I had just filled.

After removing the carburetor and fuel lines and draining the water; removing the fuel pump cap and putting in a new filter screen, I put everything back together. Now, it fires quickly but dies. I do this 3 or 4 times and it catches and runs — at higher RPMs, but, it won't idle anymore. That is, it will idle for maybe a mintue and then slowly die.

What does the wisdom of the forum think is the likely problem & fix? Thanks.

If the fuel was ethanol, it probably phase separated, somehow changes to a yellowish-orange color that is basically just like water.
It sounds like you still have issues in the carb, and it may be blocked pas-sages or jets (low speed/idle, most likely). You might also find a black sooty type particles that may be from fuel lines breaking down from ethanol use. Or it may just be the trash that ethanol turns into. You should blow out all fuel and air pas-sages, and jets with compressed air, re-as-semblance then try again. Remember what the low speed adjustment is when taking apart, and don't forget, remove needle valve seat and reset float height when installing (it is not unusual to have some trash on backside of the seat, and if r&r seat float height always changes. ).
You should also add a fuel additive to each tank of fuel.

    Good luck.
