  • 1993 Johnson Never Been Used

    Hello all!

I have a situation that I can't seem to find anywhere online. A marina in my area recently bought out another marina and found three 1993 Johnson short shaft outboards (2hp, 6hp, and 9.9hp) that were still in their original crates with the plastic and tags still on them. I am interested in buying the 9.9hp for my 14ft aluminum vhull. Since there has never been fuel or water run through them, should I expect it to run like a brand new machine? Should I worry about seals/gaskets that could have dried out?

Also is $1000 a reasonable price? Seems like it since that seems to be the price of smaller, used motors.

    Thanks!

That price I'd consider too high, although it could be fair if you were a collector of old motors (looking in mint condition). They originally sold for about $400-$500. What I'd worry most about, after sitting up for such an extended time, is if any humidity got inside and started rusting any of the bearings, or other internal steel surfaces? You wouldn't know until it was used for a good 4-5 months? If storage conditions were clean, and very little humidity, it could be as good as new?
It might run like a new motor initially, but it might not last?

    Good luck.
