  • Grinding when attempting to start.

    VJ150GLETG 1993 Johnson 150hp Fast Strike

Went to start it the first time of the season and it turned over slow and the battery died after not long at all. Figured it was the battery so I got a new one and had the same symptom so I exchanged that battery and got another and seemed even worse. Turned over slow for about 5 seconds and then not at all.

I started to think it was something causing restriction inside my motor so I pulled the plugs and it would turn over but battery was almost dead so wasn't sure what to think.

I decided to put the boat in gear and turn the prob by hand(no access the the flywheel to hand turn it that way). It was hard to turn in both directions until it made a click/popping sound and was then easy to turn. So I tried to start it with the fully charged battery again and now all it does is make a grinding sound like it is trying to engage the flywheel.

I pulled the starter but Autozone couldn't test it. I tried to test it myself using jumper cables but couldn't figure it out.

Looking up in the hole where the starter goes and it looks like there is a small gear that the starter is always engaged with unlike where the starter would normally kick up to engage. Couldn't see very well but kinda looks like the smaller gear attached to the motor is what kicks up to engage the flywheel.

Not sure if my original problem was the starter and I just need to replace it or if I messed something up turning the prop by hand. Any input would be greatly appreciated and I appreciate you taking the time to read through my long post!!

    Thanks in advance, Ricky

P.S. I have the manual and have still not been able to figure out how the starter to flywheel mechanism works.

Still trying to decide if I should just buy a new starter and hope that fixes it or just bite the bullet and take it into a shop. Just don't really wanna pay the extra labor if it is the starter because I can easily do that myself. On the other hand don't want to buy a starter and then that doesn't fix the issue. Decisions decisions.
