First, let me introduce myself. I am Brandon from Malta.

I have just bought a 2nd hand boat (13ft) Albatross 390. It had a Johnson outboard as described in the Title of this post. The boat with carrier was really good price; €850 so the motor was almost given to me for free.

The info given to me by the previous owner was that this outboard was not used mush as it was serving as an auxiliary. In fact when I opened it from the inside it was in a very good condition. The bolt heads seemed to never been touched by a spanner and where there are gaskets, they seem to be unopened as they still have the factory paint where the two metal parts meet.
The previous owner told me that he had took the motor for service and change gearbox oil. I also found fresh grease on some moving parts under the recoil etc.
When I started the motor it ran after 4 recoils. At first, the outboard was turning off automatically at idling speed after 15 seconds or so, but after some tweaking on 2 screws on each side of the carb (by my father), we managed to keep it running (even on forward and reverse). Its like, we made the intake more rich, even the firing seemed to be more constant this time.
- Is there a way I can adjusted accurately as I dont want the intake to be too rich and produce sooth.
- Should I take the cylinder head off to see if there is carbon on cylinder dome?
- Also, is there a way I can check if timing is exact? I saw the markings 30 . 20 . 10 . 0 . -10 on the flywheel and a mark on a static piece of plastic but not sure how you time the engine.
- Does it have electronic ignition, or does it work on same principle as magneto?
- Can I install a rectifier to charge a small 12V battery?
- What is your opinion on this model? Was it reliable?
- Is it difficult to convert it to 8 hp ?
My question is, what should I check in this outboard? Gas pump,
