  • 2006 Johnson 175 Hp Engine temperature sensors.

My 2006 Johnson J175PXSDD 175 hp engine has two separate temperature sensors.

On the Port side head, the screw in temperature sensor has (2) wires, A White wire with Blk. stripe & A Tan wire with Blue stripe.

When the engine first starts up, it will run somewhat fast at idle, this is good, and as soon as the temperature comes up to the desired operating temperature, the sensor using the White wire/Blk stripe will signal the motor via the Quick start system to slow down to normal idle speed.

The Tan wire with blue stripe, will only signal the over temperature horn/light alarm, and limit the engine speed while this over temperature condition exists. I suggest you only 0perate the engine in this condition for a short time until the problem causing the over temperature is corrected. Water pump, water blockage or whatever is preventing the cooling of engine must be corrected, or engine will be seriously damaged.

On the Starboard side head, the screw in sensor has (1) wire. This is for the monitoring the engine for over temperature on this side of engine, it has no effect on engine idle, but alarms the system horn and light when an over temperature condition exists. The reason for a sensor in each head is that it is possible to have a water blockage in only one side, and therefor both sides must be monitored.
