  • 8hp Sailmaster J8SRLENM IMPELLER

Guys, I need help. I went to change my impeller for the first time. Vids on YouTube say it's easy. First thing that went wrong, the longest machine screw that holdS the lower unit snapped, So I cut it between the sections, Then, the shift rOd connector that should be plainly visible but hard to get to isn't there AT ALL. Either it's someplace altogether different or I just can't separate the sections enough to see it. All I can see is the sides of the gear case cover. What am I doing wrong???? I'm really quite handy so this should be a snap but "snap" also describes the sound of your part becoming two parts. Help! I'm supposed to splash in a week!

On that model (J8SRLENM), there is no shift rod connector. THe shift rod is just that... a rod... but a rod that turns to shift, not a rod that travels up and down. That shift rod on your model simply slides out as you lower the lower unit.

If the lower unit is not dropping as it should and you have all the bolts removed, I suspect that the top driveshaft splines are rusted within the crankshaft splines. If so, you may need to yank the impeller key through the water pump housing, then remove the powerhead along with the frozen in driveshaft in order to remove the driveshaft from the powerhead.

If this is not the case with your engine, please let us know what is.
