  • Strange Issue - Stalling after warm, 2004 175hp

I've got a 2004 Johnson 175 carb motor that I rebuilt 2 years ago. When started totally cold, the motor idles perfectly at approx 1000 rpm. I can idle away from the doc and cruise down the lake at WOT rpm of 5200. However, when I shut it off for an hour or so and then re-start it will start but stall after about 5 seconds. After 3 or 4 tries of starting and quickly shifting into gear I can usually get it going and then it will accelerate perfectly and run strong. I can then back down to idle and it will idle shift and accelerate perfectly. I've cleaned and rebuilt the carbs, compression is 90-95 on all cylinders, and I've done the link and sync process about 5 times. Nothing ever changes. Also, when it stalls after re-start, pressing in the key for the primer only makes it worse and harder to re-start. Getting pretty frustrated and nervous about getting stranded some day. Any ideas on what the problem could be?? Thanks in advance for any help!!

It sounds like the timer base (advance/retard) under the flywheel is sticking in the retarded position when hot.

Check that the stator isn't starting to melt down a sticky looking substance down on the timer base and powerhead area.

If a previous stator had at one time melted down, perhaps that sticky substance finally took hold?

Thanks Joe - I'll check the timer base and the stator. Was also considering getting rid of the VRO fuel pump as the motor seems to run very rich until I get it up to speed. Does the VRO ever over pump fuel/oil after shut down leaving the crank with too much fuel??

No, that would be impossible as the VRO diaphragms fluctuate back and forth only by crankcase pressure and that pressure only exists when the engine is running... BUT............

If a diaphragm failed in some manner whereas it would still function (pump fuel/oil) but leak somewhat... when at a standstill, I suppose that could allow fuel to drip past the diaphragm(s) and down the pressure hose into the crankcase.

If the engine runs okay otherwise, I assume that the carburetors aren't flooding? Easy to check... carburetor face plate off, carburetors in full view, pump the fuel primer bulb up hard. If any of the carburetors are flooding, it'll be obvious.

          Thanks Again....I'll check that too.

I’m having a similar problem with my 2003 175HP. Idles and shifts into gear flawlessly when I start it cold and leave the dock. If I shut it down for any significant amount of time (20 minutes or more) it will idle rough, cough and stall when I put into gear for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes it starts to idle smooth and I’m able to put it into gear and power away perfectly. Before I pull the flywheel off… has anyone had a similar problem? If so, how was it resolved?

            Thanks

The cough then stall usually means that it is running lean. May need to remove and clean carbs before starting on ignition.
