  • 1988 40 hp VRO with tilt trim

I just purchased a 1988 Johnson 40hp vro. The tilt trim isn't working and I really don't want to spend a lot trying to get it repaired. I've noticed that it is bolted on. I'm wondering if I can remove the tilt trim unit and manually tilt the motor?

    Thanks

Near the outside lower side area of the starboard transom bracket, you will see a hole. Within that hole you will see a slotted screw which is actually a manual release valve.

Loosing that valve exactly two turns (no more than 2 turns), will allow you to raise and lower the engine manually... BUT... it will lower no more that the extended trim rams which is the full trim out position.

Tell us what the PTT unit is doing.... electric motor runs and nothing happens, electric motor doesn't run at all, runs in one direction only, what??

Thanks so much for the info. I'm actually going to be checking it out today to see if I can try to narrow it down. I'll post my latest info this evening.

      Thanks
