  • Drive shaft wear

I have a 1999 johnson 150 and upon replacing the water pump, I noticed the drive shaft had more wear on one side where the upper water pump housing is...It has a wobble in shaft when turning by hand and feels like a rough spot when turned at a specific spot. Is this normal? ?

I assume that you're speaking of the lower unit being on your work bench?

At any rate, having a wobble in the driveshaft.... are you saying the driveshaft is bent? How else would it wobble?

And this rough spot..... a area where the driveshaft is dragging?

No, neither is not normal. The driveshaft when being turned by hand should be straight and true from top to bottom, and smooth turning through a 360 degree turning.

However, I'm speaking of a one piece driveshaft and I'm aware that your engine most likely incorporates a two piece setup. The two piece setup could obviously have a wobble... BUT... a rough dragging spot I would consider a problem.

      Appreciate

Thank you, it does drag as I had called it a rough spot...it is a 2 piece shaft and I just was hoping that I didn't have to get into the guts of it....
